History of the Fairfax Racquet Club
Fairfax Racquet Club opened in October 1972 and has the distinction of being the oldest racquet sports club in Northern Virginia. When it began operations there was one indoor tennis club in the area, which was located where the Vienna Metro Station now stands. Four other indoor tennis clubs were being built in the same year. Fairfax Racquet Club (FRC) was conceived by four of its present owners and they were joined by other investors. When FRC opened there were six indoor, air conditioned tennis courts. A year later four outdoor courts were added and were covered by an air structure to permit year round play.  In 1981, six racquetball courts were built along with additional space which was leased for use by a Nautilus group.

In July of 1989 FRC took over the Nautilus Fitness Center and made it an integral part of the Club. The area was completely renovated, along with the locker rooms, and outfitted with all new equipment. It features the newest and most advanced Nautilus equipment, a state-of-the-art elliptical machines, free weights, treadmills, Lifecycles, Cardio Theater, Stairmasters, concept 2 rowing ergometers, Nordic Tracs and more.

In October of 1994 FRC opened the "LIFETIME RESULTS PERSONAL TRAINING CENTER". It is housed in what had been racquetball court "D". This center was conceived and designed for serious one-on-one training utilizing the Super Slow training protocol.

In 1996 an award wining four-court permanent tennis structure complete with viewing areas and ADA bathrooms replaced our four-court outdoor/air structure complex.

In the summer of 1998 tennis courts 1-3 were renovated and converted from “Boltex” (carpet) to “Deco Turf II” a cushioned surface that is also in the Tennis building housing courts 7-10. The entire interior of courts 1-3 were re-insulated, new backdrop curtains and netting were installed and electric water coolers added. In the summer of 2000 the same was done for courts 4-6 (West Tennis Barn)

In the Spring of 2002 construction was completed on an additional 2 indoor tennis courts as well as an expansion of our Fitness Center, additional locker rooms, a rehabilitation center (EXCEL), additional parking and extensive landscaping.

Stability has been the key word in FRC's history. Many of its present members joined even before the Club was opened. There have been only two managers and many of its desk personnel, usually a transient group in clubs, have been with us for years. From an historical view, stable membership and staff reflect a pleasant and satisfying atmosphere in which to recreate and work. Our goal for the future is to continue thusly by maintaining a well-trained, personable staff, which is responsive to our member’s desires and needs.
